Penn State Chicago Board Applications


Being a part of the Penn State Chicago board is a great way to give back to the Penn State and Chicago communities while meeting fellow Nittany Lions. With your involvement, our Chapter can remain impactful to the Penn State and Chicagoland communities and continue to grow our presence in the heart of Big 10 country! 

The board meets in person every two months and while position commitments vary, the average commitment per position is a few hours per month.

 Executive Commitee Opportunities

The Executive Committee of the Board consists of the following four executive officers of the Chapter and acts as the governing body of the Chapter: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Below is a description of the open executive committee opportunities.

Executive committee applications are due by Sunday, March 18th.

  • Vice President 
    The Vice President shall be the President-Elect and serve a two year term. The Vice President shall work closely with the President to manage the day-to-day operations of the Chapter.

     
  • Treasurer
    The Treasurer shall safeguard, account for, and disburse the funds of the Chapter. Accounts shall be balanced by the Treasurer before each Board meeting so that a report may be presented. 

     
  • Secretary
    The Secretary shall keep the minutes and act as custodian of records. The Secretary is also responsible for conducting voting procedures. The Secretary shall work closely with the President and Vice-President to prepare all reports as required by the Alumni Association.

 Chairs, Directors, and Member at Large Opportunities

The objective of the board Chairs and Directors includes, but is not limited to: setting defined goals and taking ownership for the respective position initiatives, along with forming committees to assist with activities. Below is a description of opportunities. 

Chair, Director, and Member at Large applications are due by Sunday, April 22nd.

  • Alumni Admissions Chair
    • Coordinate with the Admissions office to ensure Penn State has representation at local college fairs 
    • Keep board and Chapter members updated with latest admissions news and notes  
       
  • Scholarship Chair
    • Lead Scholarship fundraising initiatives and annual event
    • Review scholarship applicants for upcoming scholarship year 
       
  • Service Chair
    • ​Lead Night for the Cure event and THON fundraiser activities
    • Coordinate with local community service initiatives (Chicago YSA Field Day, Chicago Children's Advocacy Center, etc.)
       
  • Sports Chair
    • ​Act as the main point of contact for Penn State sports tickets and local road trips 
    • Be the primary liaison of information regarding local sporting events of interest and when Penn State teams are playing in the region
       
  • Social Engagement Director
    • Schedule and plan social opportunities for Chapter members (i.e. dining outs, happy hours, preseason football party, etc.)
       
  • Watch Party Director
    • Coordinate and lead activities for football watch parties
       
  • Professional Development Director
    • ​Schedule and plan career related activities for Chapter members 
       
  • Promotional Director
    • ​Lead efforts for creating and procuring promotional items
       
  • Parent Liaison Director
    • ​​Help plan the annual student picnic and act as a liaison for parents of current PSU Students for Chapter events and activities 
       
  • Social Media Administrator
    • Provide oversight and direction to the the Chapter's social media handles (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram)
       
  • Website Administrator
    • ​Provide oversight and direction to the Chapter's website. Experience with website design programs is a plus.
       
  • Member At Large 
    • Be a liaison to the Board Chairs and Directors 
    • Help Chairs and Directors achieve their goals
    • Propose new ideas to Committee Chairs and Executive Board

The mission of the Greater Chicago Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association is to promote The Pennsylvania State University, its students and alumni in the Chicago area by providing educational, social, community service and philanthropic opportunities for its members and friends while upholding the values set forth by The Pennsylvania State University. 

The Chapter geographic area is specifically defined by Postal Zip Codes which cover the Greater Chicago metropolitan area from Elkhart, Indiana to Rockford, Illinois. The Chapter is organized exclusively for social, cultural, charitable and educational purposes, including distributions of funds to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
