New Penn State Shows on Big Ten Network
Hosted by President Graham Spanier
Due to the popularity of the first “Expert Opinion” series of sports-related TV shows, President Graham Spanier has just completed an additional three shows for the Big Ten Network. Each “Expert Opinion with Graham Spanier” show features President Spanier and a panel of experts discussing pressing sports topics of the day.
The shows are:
October 7, “Careers in Sports Journalism”
Panelists: Marlen Garcia, sports reporter for USA Today; Malcolm Moran, Penn State Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society and director of Penn State’s John Curley Center for Sports Journalism; and Brad Wolverton, senior editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education
Topics: the challenge of objectivity, coverage of college sports versus pro sports, and the state of the industry for graduating students.
October 14, “Impact of New Media”
Panelists: Marie Hardin, associate director for research at Penn State's John Curley Center for Sports Journalism; Kathleen Hessert, founder and president of Sports Media Challenge, which coaches athletes and others on traditional and social media; Jason Kint, senior vice president and general manager of CBSSports.com.
Topics: the merits, faults, and impact of online and social media and how it’s changing sports reporting.
October 21, “Life After NCAA”
Panelists: Coquese Washington, Penn State's women's basketball coach and former pro basketball player; Chris Zorich, a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, manager of student welfare and development at Notre Dame, and former pro football player; Kyle Brady, Big Ten Network analyst and former pro football player.
Topics: the preparation student-athletes receive during their college careers for the pressures and fame of pro sports or for their post-collegiate, non-sports careers.
